Jane and Fraser Brooks founded You Raise Me Up, following the sudden death of their daughter Megan on 3rd May 2011. Megan was just 17 years old.
Jane and Fraser wanted to reach out to other families for support, who had been through a similar experience. They soon realised that there were no organisations available to support grieving parents who have lost a child aged 16-25.
Initially the purpose of the charity was to help fund funeral costs, which can be upward of £3500. This quickly developed into providing a counselling service for surviving family members, and help them in any way possible to work through the unimaginable grief and pain of losing a child. We have, and continue to help over 120 families, since the charity began.
The emotional and financial strain that a funeral can put on those left behind is devastating, and none of us have life insurance for our children. Sadly, arranging a beautiful and deserving service is the last thing they will be able to do for them; all this at a time when just getting out of bed feels like a momentous task. This is why You Raise Me Up aim to take away the financial burden of giving a child the best possible farewell, to allow our families to focus on their grief and healing.
